Built in the 8th and 9th centuries by the Syailendra dynasty, Borobudur was once buried under volcanic ash and dense jungle for centuries before being rediscovered and extensively restored. The construction process, which took decades to complete, involved thousands of workers and millions of andesite stone blocks, forming a massive stepped stupa structure that represents Mount Meru, the center of the cosmos in Buddhist belief. Each level of the temple represents a spiritual stage towards enlightenment, from the kamadhatu to the arupadhatu.
The uniqueness of Borobudur lies in its approximately 2,672 beautifully carved relief panels that surround its nine terraces, telling stories of Jataka, Lalitavistara, Gandawyuha, and Avadana, which are the teachings and life of Buddha. In addition, there are 504 Buddha statues scattered throughout each level, with 72 perforated stupas surrounding the main stupa at the summit. Circling the temple in a clockwise direction (pradakshina) is a deep meditation experience, where each relief and statue provides lessons about karma and dharma that are timeless.
